![]() For the cost spread over 150k miles, the MAF is a real bargain and it is really the most sensitive, delicate and critical sensor for determining the proper fuel delivery on a modern computer controlled engine. If you want and expect peak performance from your vehicle, Pre-cat O2 sensors should be replaced every 100k miles, MAF's typcially do not have a defined service interval, but you might as well consider replaceing it at 150k miles. Understand that the MAF and Pre-cat O2 sensors are the most important and sensitive sensors on modern computer controlled engines and neither will last forever. It may work well enough not to trigger a SES/CEL/MIL, but it will not function properly. Do not think a cheap MAF will function well over the wide range of engine loads. There is no way a cheap Asain $20-$75 MAF can measure moving airflow in Grams/Second over a wide range of loads and temperatures. They contain Platinum and rather advanced circuitry that is used to calibrate the MAF over a wide range of operating paramaters. Yes they are espensive, but there is a reason they are expensive. Even if you could remove the silicon, once it starts to "flow", it continues, so you are just wasting time and effort trying to fight this problem.īest to just replace the MAF with a genuine Simens/VDO MAF. No spray cleaners really can remove the silicon. MAF cleaner has no effect on removing this silicon conformal coating. Over time and many heat cycles this silicon potting compound starts to "flow" and will eventually start to coat/insulate the hot wire and cause the MAF to under report. ![]() The silicon coating is from the conformal potting compound that the MAF circuit board is covered with. The biggest problem with the E46 MAF is contamination from silicon coating of the hot wire. ![]() The only thing MAF cleaning can typical remove is hydrocarbon build up of oil vapors and the E46 does not have oil vapors that typically get anywhere near the MAF. Most people that clean the MAF on an E46 and claim it helped probably had a different problem like loose wiring or leaking plumbing. ![]()
